36th Annual Arkansas Governor's Confrence on Tourism in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

The 36th Annual Arkansas Governor's Conference on Tourism arrives here in less than two weeks, bringing hundreds of tourism industry professionals from around the state. Governor Mike Beebe will be the featured speaker at the Monday luncheon.
This conference is the largest in-state meeting of travel and tourism professionals. It brings together representatives of attractions and destinations with lodging owners, restaurateurs, chambers and convention & visitors bureaus, governmental agencies, media and others.
Registration starts at 11 a.m. Sunday, Mar. 7 at the Best Western Inn of the Ozarks Convention Center. The Silent Auction benefiting the Arkansas Tourism Development Foundation opens that evening, 4-6 p.m. An “Early Bird Wedding Reception” party follows, Sunday at 6 p.m., at the 1886 Crescent Hotel and Spa.
Opening ceremonies are Monday at 8:30 a.m., followed by a General Session meeting at 9 a.m. However, registration continues from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
At Monday morning’s general session, Vickie L. Henry, CEO of Feedback Plus, Inc., will deliver an address entitled, “Would You Want To Do Business With You?” The Arkansas Tourism Marketing Team makes its presentation to the group Monday afternoon. T. Scott Gross, CEO of T. Scott Gross & Company and author of the book, “Positively Outrageous Service,” will speak to the group in two sessions Tuesday on the topics of customer service and MicroBranding.
Monday and Tuesday options for attendees include Off Site Workshops on “The Attraction of Local Architecture” and “Packaging What You Already Have – Eureka Springs Case Study.” Sessions dealing with customer service, online social media, and the “Welcome to Arkansas” program are offered on Monday morning. Online social media is again covered in Monday’s afternoon on-site sessions, as are adventure sports and “New Frontiers That Change Everything,” by Dr. Lowell Catlett, Futurist and Regent’s Professor, New Mexico State University.
Tuesday’s presentations include mobile phone marketing, “reasons to ride,” getting to know your customers, and growing tourism through market research.
The Banquet Reception is Mar. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Convention Center. The Arkansas Hospitality Association/Annual Henry Awards Banquet follows at 7:15 p.m. The dinner will feature Executive Director, Richard Davies and Miss Arkansas, Sarah Slocum, and will include a presentation of the tourism industry’s annual Henry Awards by the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism.

UFO Conference Focuses

On Alleged Government Cover-up

(EUREKA SPRINGS, AR) – The 21st Annual Ozark UFO Conference will be held at the Inn of the Ozarks Convention Center in Eureka Springs, Arkansas April 10-12, 2009. The conference will include eight lectures and audio-visual presentations on Friday and Saturday. Sunday morning "mini-sessions" will include speakers and videotape session.

There will be considerable attention paid to the alleged government cover-up of UFO’s. Grant Cameron, whose website is entitled “A Tale of Extraterrestrial Politics in the White House,” will address the conference on presidential knowledge of UFO’s. Richard Dolan, author of UFO’s and the National Security State, will discuss exposing the allegedly decades-old government cover-up of the subject.

Wendelle C. Stevens is a retired U.S. Air Force pilot-turned-UFO investigator and researcher. His military career included anomalous UFO sightings reports and film footage made by Air Force crews. Stevens will speak on what has become his lifelong interest in uncovering the truth regarding UFO activity.

Presenter Dr. Joseph P. Farrell, of Sioux Falls, SD, has a doctorate in patristics (the study of early Christian writers) from the University of Oxford. His first book Giza DeathStar, was published in 2002. Later works include The Cosmic War: Interplanetary Warfare, Modern Physics, and Ancient Texts, in 2007, and Secrets of the Unified Field: The Philadelphia Experiment, the Nazi Bell, and the Discarded Theory, in 2008.

Dr. Paul LaViolette, Ph.D., will focus on reverse engineering of UFO technologies. Author of The Talk of the Galaxy, Earth Under Fire, Genesis of the Cosmos (Beyond the Big Bang), Subquantum Kinetics, and editor of A Systems View of Man, LaViolette received his B.A. in physics from Johns Hopkins, his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, and Ph.D. from Portland State University. He is currently president of the Starburst Foundation, an interdisciplinary scientific research institute, and is a resident of Athens, Greece.

Presenter Ted Phillips will have a much shorter trip to the conference. The Reeds Spring, MO resident’s presentation, The Marley Woods: Ten Years of Research, will detail decades of strange encounters and sightings near Altus Spring Hollow, MO.

Several presenters return from last year’s conference lineup, including Timothy Good, Linda Moulton Howe and Allison Joiner.

Good has interviewed key UFO witnesses including astronauts, military and intelligence specialists, pilots, politicians and scientists. The British researcher has amassed a wealth of evidence of the existence of UFO’s, including several thousand declassified intelligence documents. He has published six books on the subject.

Emmy Award-winning TV producer, investigative reporter and author Howe will deliver a presentation entitled Bentwaters 1980: Telepathic Lights? Her website received the 2006 W3 Silver Award for excellence in news, the 2003 Web Award for Standard of Excellence and the 2000 Encyclopedia Britannica Award honoring internet excellence.

Reporter Angela Joiner returns to update the conference on her investigation of strange lights and sightings early last year in Stephenville, Texas.

March 20 through the 22nd for the 13th Annual Spring Antique Show and Sale at the Inn of the Ozarks Convention Center, Highway 62 West. The festivities begin with a special Wine and Cheese Preview Friday, the 20th at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $10. Saturday hours are 10 to 6 and Sunday 10 to 4. Back by popular demand – china and pottery repair! This popular show features dealers from 17 states this spring including Georgia and New Mexico. Fifty seven dealers will set up displaying a wide variety of merchandise for sale!

Eureka Springs Named Tree City USA® by the Arbor Day Foundation

Eureka Springs, AR has been named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to community forestry.

It is the twenty-seventh year Eureka Springs has received this national recognition.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.

Eureka Springs has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community: having a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Communities that receive Tree City USA recognition not only have taken the time to meet these four standards, they recognize that:

· Trees promote healthier communities. Leaves filter the air we breathe by removing dust and other particles.

· Trees moderate climate, conserve water and provide habitat for wildlife.

· Trees in urban areas reduce the heat island effect caused by pavement and buildings.

· Properly placed trees can increase property values, and buildings in wooded areas rent more quickly and tenants stay longer.

“A community, its elected officials and its citizens that provide needed care for its trees deserves recognition and thanks,” said John Rosenow, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Trees are a vital component of the infrastructure in our cities and towns, and they also provide environmental and economical benefits. Cities that are recognized with a Tree City USA designation go to great lengths to plant and care for the community forest.”

Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge Cat Of The Week

Raphael, a mountain lion, arrived at the refuge July 15, 1994. His previous owners bought him at an auction for $500! They said they wanted to save him from those "YaHoos" at the auction. They carried him home and proceeded to raise him. He was neutered and his claws removed. He was very well taken care of and loved, but the couple was right in knowing a cougar would not make a good house pet.

When Raphael arrived he was just a small, active cub. He was fun to interact with and was very playful as a cub. Guest at the refuge enjoyed "chirping" back and forth with him until he was moved to a habitat. Raphael has lived with four other mountain lions in the huge habitat built for them by interns and supporters. He spends most of his days lying around with his best friend, Kudy. Where one is, you will find the other. Raphael hides his wildness and seems much like a house cat. However, he is a wild animal and demands respect. While visiting the refuge watch for him and Kudy lying on the bench soaking up the sun.

You can sponsor a bench today if you like. $300 builds the bench and gets a plaque with your name on it. While visiting the refuge notice all the benches in the habitats. We still need more.

Arkansas Hotelier of the Year goes to Eureka Springs Man.

Moyer Named Arkansas Hotelier of the Year

During the recent Arkansas Hospitality Association’s “Stars of the Industry 2009” banquet, Jack V. Moyer (pictured left) was named Hotelier of the Year when he was presented the AHA’s coveted Golden Key Award. Moyer is vice-president of operations and development for Eureka Springs’ two historic hotels, The 1886 Crescent Hotel and Spa and The 1905 Basin Park Hotel; and proprietor for Harrison’s historic hotel, The 1929 Hotel Seville. Fellow Eurekan and president of the Arkansas Lodging Association, Jed Bullock (pictured right), made the presentation at ceremonies held at North Little Rock’s Wyndham Riverfront Hotel.
“I was quite surprised and honored by this award,” said Moyer. “You do what you do because you love it and the people with whom you work. Wonderful awards like this provide recognition to our whole team, a team that tries very hard every day.”
Other Eurekans were honored in two other categories that evening. Recognized as Hospitality Employee of the Year finalists were Kathy Marquez, front desk clerk and Employee of the Year for The 1886 Crescent Hotel and Spa; Michael Teague of the Best Western Inn of the Ozarks; and Sara Baruth of the Best Western Eureka Inn who took home the state award. Hospitality Manager of the Year finalists were RoAnna McDaniel, food and beverage manager and director of sales for The 1929 Hotel Seville; and Randy Wolfinbarger, general manager of Best Western Inn of the Ozarks.
Prior to the actual presentation of the Golden Key Award to Moyer, some of his hospitality industry involvement was noted such as hospitality degrees from both Paul Smith’s College and Penn State University; chairmanship of the advisory committee to the University of Arkansas’ School of Hospitality and Restaurant Management; also chairmanships of the Greater Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce, Eureka Springs Tourism Co-op, Eureka Springs Community Development Partnership; and membership on the Historic Hotels of America Board of Advisors and the Mayor’s Tourism Task Force of Eureka Springs.
It was also explained how Moyer has been responsible for the multi-million dollar refurbishing and redevelopment of all three of his historic hotels. He also administered the construction of the Cottages at Crescent Park and was a consultant on the restoration of the Lake Lure Inn in Lake Lure, North Carolina.
Moyer, a native of Elmira, New York, is the son of Paul and Kay Moyer of Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. He has one daughter, Jordan, age12.
“It has been my policy, one embraced by all three of my hotels, to boil it all down to a simple creed that proves successful,” Moyer added. “By creating lifetime memories, building the individual, and protecting the irreplaceable we have cohesive teams at my properties who are helping me help them accomplish our corporate goals. I think this award accredits this creed.”

“Art of the World” is this year’s theme. Professional Artist and Non-Professional Artist are the two categories, and you must choose a country or region to be portrayed in your design.

Entry forms are available at THE Auditorium Monday through Friday from 9:00am until 5:00p.m. All forms must be filled out and returned to THE Auditorium no later than April 3rd, 2009 by 5:00p.m. Art must be installed and ready for judging no later than April 30th, 2009 and must remain up throughout the entire month of May.

Winners will be announced Saturday May 2nd, 2009 at Basin Spring Park during the ARTrageous Parade. $300 first place, $200 second place and $100 third place will be awarded to winners in each category.

The ARTrageous marching, dancing, skipping, riding or otherwise tumbling down Spring Street takes place on Saturday, May 2nd 2009.

This year’s theme is “Art of the World”. Cash prizes of $300 for First Place, $200 for Second Place and $100 for Third Place will be awarded.

22nd Annual May Festival of the Arts: Art in Basin Spring Park

This year the juried Art in the Park will include all five weekends in May. With the backdrop of FREE music and entertainment in Basin Spring Park, every weekend in May on Friday, Saturday and Sunday Memorial Day Monday will feature a mini Art show.

Booth space is limited to 10x10 and you must provide your own tent. All items being sold must be handmade and juried in. Demonstrations of your art and/or craft are strongly encouraged. There is no application fee. The booth fee is $25 per weekend. Each Sunday (Monday of Memorial Day Weekend) we will award a $50 People’s Choice Award to one of the Artists in the park, this is where demonstrating will help you out!

House Concert Benefits Clear Spring School

On Friday, March 13th, Eureka songstresses will come together for the
first time to present an evening of vocal stylings and harmonizing to benefit
Clear Spring School.

Karen FitzPatrick, of The Ariels; Opal Fly, along with her sax; Pearl
Brick and Denise Lanuti, both of Folk fame; Jane Tucker, of The Greasy Greens
and Loretta Crenshaw, local songbird, will form for the evening, the group Cool Clear Water.

The performance will be held at The Unitarian Church at 17 Elk Street in Eureka Springs.
Doors will open at 7:00pm, and admission is $15.
There will be wine and refreshments available for a donation.

SOUPS HEATING UP FOR MUSEUM FUNDRAISER 2009

Eureka Springs' finest restaurants are stirring up their specialty soups for the Eureka Springs Historical Museum "Souper Soup" fundraising event. This annual event takes place following the Victorian Classic race, on March 14th, 2009. Hours are from 11 am to 1 pm.

This year it will again be held at the E.S. High School Cafeteria, located across the street from the race finish, at the Inn of the Ozarks. Tickets are just $6.00 for adults, $3.00 for children under 12. Your ticket includes two bowls of soup of your choice (there are over 12 varieties offered,) cornbread, beverage and choice of dessert.

Desserts are provided by local Bed & Breakfast businesses. First, second and third prizes are awarded for both soups and desserts. The competition is great, so entries are all fabulous.

The Antique Trail leads to Eureka Springs, Arkansas this
March 21 and 22 with the 13th Annual Spring Antique Show and Sale
featuring 57 dealers from 14 different states. A special Wine and
Cheese evening will be held on Friday March 20th from 5:30 to 7 P.M. –
a time to browse and buy before the weekend. The cost is $10 good for

This popular show is held at the Inn of the Ozarks Convention

VIPs Light-Blue About Performing In
Chamber’s “Aqua Comedy Show”

Virtual Insanity Players (VIPs), Eureka Springs’ premiere improvisational comedy troupe, have, after weeks of intense negotiations, signed a binding contract to appear at the Greater Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce’s “The First (and Maybe the Last) Eureka Springs Aqua Comedy Show.” The curtain goes up on the benefit show on Tuesday, April 28 at 7:00 p.m. on the Ozark Mountain Hoe-Down stage.

“I could not be happier about this contract being signed,” stated Ken Rundel, the director of the VIPs. “Who woulda thought that someone in our troupe could write!?!”

Other members of the troupe are Annunziata Scarpino, Carmen Caldwell, and Bill Ott. “To date we have already entertained crowds in a two-county area. Count ‘em. Two,” explained Ott. “And everyone who attended our performances had a wonderful time.”

The “Aqua Show” will also feature stand-up comedy and music from local talent.

“It seems everyone is still suffering from cabin fever despite recent glimpses of spring. So we thought we would plan an event for locals to help lighten the mood going into the tourism season,” said Chamber Vice-President Lisa Liggett. “The proceeds of the night’s event will be used to supplement the Economic Development budget of the Chamber. All entertainers are donating their time.”

  “We’re donating our time?” squeeked Rundel upon hearing the pro bono news flash. “I guess that’s what we get for signing a binding contract without reading it. That’s okay. We’ll still bring our ‘A’ game. And remember kids, ‘Reading Is Fundemental.’”

The Ozark Mountain Hoe Down also has donated the space for the performance.

When asked about the “Aqua” tag in the title of the event, Liggett revealed that the evening would carry a PG-13 rating and may not be entirely suitable for families with small children. “No vulgar language, or other inappropriate behavior. I guarantee it won’t be blue. But aqua? We’ll just have to see.”

Gloria Stevens, Chamber Visitor Information Center Manager, stated, “You tend to kid the ones you love. So we’ll be lampooning locals, tourists and others who regularly touch our lives in an effort to paste some grins on our hard working audience, those front-line employees who are the life-blood of our local tourism industry. Plus, everyone needs a little laughter before going into a tourism season full throttle.”

Stevens went on to say, “All we hear from the media these days is gloom and doom. We’ll show them otherwise by having a great turnout that Tuesday evening”

Tickets for the evening are $10 per person and are available at the Chamber of Commerce.

Sponsored by the 1905 Basin Park Hotel, the 2009 Eureka Springs Blues Weekend will feature Guitar Shorty, Hubert Sumlin & the Buddy Flett Band and Joe Louis Walker headlining evening shows in THE Auditorium May 28, 29 & 30 respectively. For acoustic guitar lovers, we have Delta Blues legend David "Honeyboy" Edwards headlining a special "Acoustic Afternoon at THE Auditorium" on Saturday, May 30th. Shows will also be held throughout the weekend in the 1905 Basin Park Hotel's Barefoot Ballroom and Ozark Room, Basin Spring Park, and at various venues around Eureka Springs.

This year's Blues Weekend will be a fundraiser for The Blues Foundation's Handy Artist Relief Trust and Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. The HART fund provides assistance to musicians in need, including acute, chronic & preventive medical & dental care, as well as funeral expenses. For more information, please visit www.Blues.org. Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is located seven miles south of Eureka Springs on Highway 23. It provides lifetime refuge to abandoned, abused, and neglected "Big Cats", with emphasis on tigers, lions, leopards, and cougars. ESBW Producer Charles "Rags" Ragsdell and his wife Lori have been supporters of both organizations for over a decade. As volunteers, they help produce the Eureka Springs Blues Weekend and several other music events. Rags is also a Charter Member of The Blues Foundation, and a member of Turpentine Creek's Board of Directors.

Other headliners appearing in The Auditorium and the 1905 Basin Park Hotel Barefoot Ballroom include EG Kight, Moreland & Arbuckle, Mary Flower, RJ Mischo, Lee McBee & the Confessors, Deanna Bogart and John Nemeth. Also, International Blues Challenge winner JP Soars & the Red Hots and Ozarks Blues Society Blues Challenge winners Oreo Blue and Kory Montgomery & Isayah Warford will be opening acts.

Thursday evening at THE Auditorium will feature Guitar Shorty. Six-time Blues Music Award nominee Guitar Shorty started his professional career at the tender age of 16, playing for Ray Charles. He recorded his first single under the direction of Willie Dixon the next year, and went on to play with greats such as T-Bone Walker, Big Joe Turner, Little Richard and Sam Cooke. Since then, Guitar Shorty has headlined festivals around the world, and won the Contemporary Album Blues Music Award in 2007 for "We the People".

Opening for Guitar Shorty will be International Blues Challenge winner JP Soars & the Red Hots. JP and his band bested over 100 bands in the 2009 International Blues Challenge, held by The Blues Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee. JP also won a custom Gibson guitar and a Category 5 amp for the Albert King Award for Most Promising Blues Guitarist. JP was raised in Cedarville, near Fayetteville, and looks forward to returning "home" for his first Arkansas performance.

On Friday, Grammy nominee, nine-time Blues Music Award nominee, four-time BMA winner and Blues Hall of Famer Hubert Sumlin will headline THE Auditorium. Raised in Hughes, Arkansas and after a stint in James Cotton's band, at the age of 18 Hubert became Howlin' Wolf's guitarist. Sumlin's licks are heard on hits like "Smokestack Lightnin'" and "Wang Dang Doodle", and he has been cited by almost every major blues guitarist as one of their prime inspirations.

Sumlin has been a featured artist in Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festivals and appeared in the films "10 Days Out", "Lightning in a Bottle" and "Cadillac Records". Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stone's Keith Richard appeared on Sumlin's "About Them Shoes", another testament to his influence on today's guitar greats. Hubert will be backed by The Buddy Flett Band, who also appeared in "10 Days Out", Kenny Wayne Shepherd's road-trip documentary.

Opening for Sumlin will be Kory Montgomery & Isayah Warford, who represented the Ozarks Blues Society in the International Blues Challenge's Solo/Duo competition. Also appearing will be Oreo Blue, who represented the Ozarks Blues Society in the International Blues Challenge's Band competition.

Also on Friday, BMA nominee John Nemeth and BMA winner Deanna Bogart will perform in the 1905 Basin Park Hotel's Barefoot Ballroom. Nemeth has wowed crowds around the world with great vocals and harp playing, and simply blew away the crowd on the King Biscuit stage with Anson Funderburg & the Rockets after the passing of harp legend Sam Meyers. Deanna Bogart is one of the most musically gifted ladies on the planet. A "quadruple threat", Deanna sings, plays piano and saxophone, and writes great songs.

Saturday afternoon at THE Auditorium features Grammy and Blues Music Award winner and two-time Blues Hall of Famer David "Honeyboy" Edwards. Honeyboy is the last of the original Mississippi Delta Blues guitarists. Unlike guitarists like Eric Clapton who say Robert Johnson influenced their music, Honeyboy actually played with Johnson! Honeyboy's life has been intertwined with almost every major blues legend, including both Robert and Tommy Johnson, Charlie Patton, Big Joe Williams, Rice "Sonny Boy Williamson" Miller, Howlin' Wolf, Peetie Wheatstraw, Sunnyland Slim, Lightnin' Hopkins, Big Walter, Little Walter, Magic Sam, and Muddy Waters! In 1942, Alan Lomax recorded Honeyboy in Clarksdale, Mississippi for the Library of Congress. Since then, Honeyboy has recorded 14 albums and has appeared on 38 compilations, and has performed at hundreds of festivals around the world. Honeyboy also appeared as himself in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.

Opening for Honeyboy are EG Kight and Mary Flower. Both ladies are multiple Blues Music Award nominees, and are known around the world for their guitar playing, singing, and songwriting. They will also perform sets in the Basin Park Hotel Ozark Room on Friday and Saturday evenings respectively.

Saturday will feature Multiple Grammy and Blues Music Award winner Joe Louis Walker. Joe Louis has been nominated for an astounding 39 Blues Music Awards, winning three times. Joe Louis is a true powerhouse guitar virtuoso, unique singer & prolific songwriter who has toured the world throughout his career and earned himself a legion of dedicated fans around the globe. He has recorded with the likes of BB King, James Cotton, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Huey Lewis, Branford Marsalis, Steve Cropper, Shemekia Copeland & Ike Turner, with a discography that counts 19 solo albums, 2 live DVD's, and countless compilations and guest appearances.

Opening for Joe Louis Walker will be RJ Mischo backed by Lee McBee & the Confessors. RJ Mischo has performed around the world, thrilling audiences with his mastery of the harmonica. Lee McBee is best known for his harp and vocal work with Mike Morgan and The Crawl, but shines on his own with one of the tightest bands in the Midwest, The Confessors. These two gifted front men will take turns entertaining the audience, then will come together at the end for some “head cutting” in what can best be described as a “harp meltdown”!

Also appearing on Saturday in the Barefoot Ballroom will be Moreland & Arbuckle and BMA nominee Candye Kane. Fairly new to the festival scene, Moreland & Arbuckle's latest CD "1861" was designated a "Pick to Click" on Bluesville. They have gained a large following with their Mississippi-style "Roots Blues" that are influenced by everyone from Little Walter to Led Zeppelin. Candye Kane has toured the world as part of RUF Records' Blues Caravan, and is known for her outrageous costumes and high-energy shows.

Candye was scheduled to appear at last year's Blues Weekend, but was unable to perform due to illness. Like many musicians, Candye didn't have insurance to cover her medical bills, and the HART Fund helped pay them. We promised Candye she would get a "rain check" for this year's Blues Weekend, and we are thrilled she is able to come and help raise money for the HART fund!

Also, internationally acclaimed blues photographer David Horowitz will exhibit his photography, and will conduct a performance photography workshop on Saturday morning. Horowitz’s award winning photographs include over four decades of blues greats, everyone from Katie Webster to Albert Collins to Stevie Ray Vaughn to today’s rising stars. House Concert Benefits Clear Spring School

On Friday, March 13th, Eureka songstresses will come together for the
first time to present an evening of vocal stylings and harmonizing to benefit
Clear Spring School.

Karen FitzPatrick, of The Ariels; Opal Fly, along with her sax; Pearl
Brick and Denise Lanuti, both of Folk fame; Jane Tucker, of The Greasy Greens
and Loretta Crenshaw, local songbird, will form for the evening, the group Cool Clear Water.

The performance will be held at The Unitarian Church at 17 Elk Street in Eureka Springs.
Doors will open at 7:00pm, and admission is $15.
There will be wine and refreshments available for a donation.
Space will be limited.

ICE STORM TO AFFECT BEAVER LAKE PARK OPENINGS

January’s ice storm resulted in extensive timber damage to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks at Beaver Lake. This, in addition to the damage from flooding in 2008, will affect park openings this spring. Although, Corps officials are confident they will have at least portions of each park ready for visitors on the scheduled opening days.

Repairs of damage caused by 2008 flooding were underway when the ice storm struck, causing further damage. The staff at Beaver is making every effort to get the parks open for the 2009 recreation season which begins April 1 at Dam Site, Hickory Creek, Horseshoe Bend, Lost Bridge North and Prairie Creek. The remaining parks are scheduled to open May 1.

The Corps is making every effort to make areas safe enough to open as soon as possible, in part by using existing and new contractors. As cleanup and repairs are made, Beaver Lake visitors are urged to be patient and use caution while driving or walking in the parks.

Camping reservations have been temporarily suspended while work is completed. Once the Corps staff determines campsites are safe for occupancy, reservations will be resumed. All seven marinas on the lake are open for business, as well as all boat launching ramps in the parks.

“The First (and Maybe the Last) Eureka Springs

Aqua Comedy Show”

The Greater Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce announced a benefit show on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 featuring stand-up comedy, improvisation and music from local talent.

“By now, everyone is suffering from cabin fever, especially with the stress of the ice storm, so we thought we would plan an event for locals to help lighten the mood going in to the tourist season,” explained Chamber Vice-President Lisa Liggett. “The proceeds of the night’s event will be used to supplement the Economic Development budget of the Chamber.”

The comedy and music event will be held at the Ozark Mountain Hoe Down beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Ozark Mountain Hoe Down has donated the space for the performance. Likewise, performers during the evening are also donating their time and talents.

When asked about the “Aqua” tag in the title of the event, Liggett revealed that the evening would carry a PG-13 rating and may not be entirely suitable for families with small children. “No vulgar language, or other inappropriate behavior; it won’t be a “blue” comedy show, just slightly blue-hued, you know – aqua.”

“You tend to kid the ones you love, so we’ll be lampooning locals, tourists and others who regularly touch our lives in an effort to paste some grins on our hard working audience,” offered Visitor Information Center Manager Gloria Stevens.

Tickets for the evening are $10 per person and are available at the Chamber of Commerce.

“We think everyone needs a little laughter before going in to the season full throttle. All we hear from the media is gloom and doom. We hope to have a great turnout Tuesday evening,” concluded Stevens.

PINE MOUNTAIN THEATER BEGINS 35TH FUNTASTIC SEASON FRIDAY MARCH 6TH

The Pine Mountain Theater, Eureka Springs’ longest running family show will kick off a season long celebration honoring their 35th birthday Friday March 6th at 8:00 p.m. The Good News Quartet gospel music pre-show begins at 7:30 p.m. Mike and Dale Bishop, the Ozarks favorite couple headline the show along with comedian Scott Dewbre, often referred to as “the funniest guy in town”. Also appearing is the versatile and energetic Pine Mountain Band. Band members include band leader Kenneth “Buster Sharp”, John Walter Morrison, Acra Turner and newcomer Gary Welch, who toured with Danny Davis and the Nashville Brass for over 17 years and has performed with various other artists and at several venues in Branson, Missouri.

This years show features new country hits, bluegrass music, classic country songs and nostalgic and classic rock n’ roll favorites. There’s always some great blues tunes performed and gospel and patriotic music are staples in every show at the theater. Some highlights include an expanded version of last season’s popular History of Dance segment, a tribute to great piano artists, and Mike’s traditional “Ragged Ol’ Flag”. Some time during the show will be dedicated to songs and artists popular during the mid seventies when the Pine Mountain theater originated. “We’re excited about the 2009 show and the 35th season celebration” stated show producer Mike Bishop. The Pine Mountain show has the distinction of being Arkansas’ 1st and most attended family show and has become a “must see” attraction for vacationers from all over the United States visiting Eureka Springs.

(EUREKA SPRINGS, AR) –

“You bring the dress (and the rings), and we’ll do the rest,” is the motto of the Greater Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce’s Wedding Committee Chair Melody Purdy.

Greater Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce members who provide wedding, romance, honeymoon and anniversary services, along with other Eureka Springs businesses that collect the city’s advertising and promotion tax have teamed up once again to award one lucky couple a $10,000 Wedding through the “Romancing the Springs” Sweepstakes. The dream wedding includes everything from the location and ceremony, to the rehearsal dinner and reception.

Wedding service providers for the $10,000 wedding give away include Musical Elegance, The 1886 Crescent Hotel, the 1905 Basin Park Hotel, Rock House Plaza, Eureka Flower Shop, Reflections Photography by Ashley, The Thorncrown Chapel, Eureka Sweets, Purdy Art Company, Eureka Springs Limousine, Angel at Rose Hall Bed and Breakfast, and the Gazebo Restaurant.

“We have given one lucky couple in each of 2007 and 2008 a $10,000 dream wedding in Eureka Springs,” explains Purdy. “It is a great opportunity to showcase Eureka Springs and all of her businesses as the most spectacular wedding and honeymoon destination in the area.”

Entries for the sweepstakes began Saturday, February 14. Those wishing to enter the sweepstakes can enter online at www.romancingthesprings.com or by visiting the wedding sweepstakes information on the Chamber’s web site at www.eurekaspringschamber.com. Official rules and regulations for the sweepstakes are also posted. Sweepstake participants may submit daily entries.

The wedding give away will be advertised on several nationally prominent Internet wedding portals including Get Married.com, One Wed.com, Arkansas Bride.com, The Knot.com, with an email blast to brides registered on Wedding Solutions.com. The Eureka Springs Advertising and Promotion Commission has dedicated advertising funds to reach these highly targeted audiences.

“The early returns on the give away entries are very impressive,” commented Purdy.

In addition, prospective brides and grooms can experience a “virtual wedding show” online at the Romancing the Springs web site.

“Brides and grooms (and family) will be able to visit the web sites of many of the wedding, romance, honeymoon and anniversary service providers in Eureka Springs directly from Romancing the Springs,” commented Purdy. “With over 4,000 weddings performed in Eureka Springs yearly, we are The Wedding Capital of the South.”

The contest runs through January 1, 2010 when the sweepstakes drawing will be held. The winner will be announced after the lucky couple is notified. The sweepstakes sponsor will post information on the winner on the Romancing the Springs web site after verification.

The winning couple will report to Eureka Springs beginning Friday, November 12, 2010, where they will begin their luxurious wedding plans with the ceremony held on Saturday, November 13, 2010.

Chamber to Share Wedding Leads with Advertisers on the “Romancing the Springs” Give-Away Web Site

The Greater Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce announced today that it would share information on wedding leads generated by the Romancing the Springs $10,000 Dream Wedding Give-away as part of the advertising package for vendors who are listed on the web site. Brides and grooms have the opportunity to enter the sweepstakes for the wedding to be given away in January 2010 online at www.romancingthesrpings.com or the Chamber of Commerce web site at www.eurekaspringschamber.com.

According to Melody Purdy, Chair of the Chamber’s wedding Committee, a major portion of the committee’s work plan is to generate leads for the wedding businesses in the Eureka Springs area.

The leads will be emailed to advertisers weekly. These Eureka Springs businesses can then copy the leads for their marketing activities.

“We are expecting many entries and a lot of lead generation with this sweepstakes effort,” concluded Purdy.

Sponsored by the 1905 Basin Park Hotel, the 2009 Eureka Springs Blues Weekend will feature Guitar Shorty, Hubert Sumlin & the Buddy Flett Band and Joe Louis Walker headlining evening shows in THE Auditorium May 28, 29 & 30 respectively. For acoustic guitar lovers, we have Delta Blues legend David “Honeyboy” Edwards headlining a special “Acoustic Afternoon at THE Auditorium” on Saturday, May 30th. Shows will also be held throughout the weekend in the 1905 Basin Park Hotel's Barefoot Ballroom and Ozark Room, Basin Spring Park, and at various venues around Eureka Springs.

This year’s Blues Weekend will be a fundraiser for The Blues Foundation’s Handy Artist Relief Trust and Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. The HART fund provides assistance to musicians in need, including acute, chronic & preventive medical & dental care, as well as funeral expenses. For more information, please visit www.Blues.org. Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is located seven miles south of Eureka Springs on Highway 23. It provides lifetime refuge to abandoned, abused, and neglected "Big Cats", with emphasis on tigers, lions, leopards, and cougars. ESBW Producer Charles “Rags” Ragsdell and his wife Lori have been supporters of both organizations for over a decade. As volunteers, they help produce the Eureka Springs Blues Weekend and several other music events. Rags is also a Charter Member of The Blues Foundation, and a member of Turpentine Creek’s Board of Directors.

Other headliners appearing in The Auditorium and the 1905 Basin Park Hotel Barefoot Ballroom include EG Kight, Moreland & Arbuckle, Mary Flower, RJ Mischo, Lee McBee & the Confessors, Deanna Bogart and John Nemeth. Also, International Blues Challenge winner JP Soars & the Red Hots and Ozarks Blues Society Blues Challenge winners Oreo Blue and Kory Montgomery & Isayah Warford will be opening acts.

Thursday evening at THE Auditorium will feature Guitar Shorty. Six-time Blues Music Award nominee Guitar Shorty started his professional career at the tender age of 16, playing for Ray Charles. He recorded his first single under the direction of Willie Dixon the next year, and went on to play with greats such as T-Bone Walker, Big Joe Turner, Little Richard and Sam Cooke. Since then, Guitar Shorty has headlined festivals around the world, and won the Contemporary Album Blues Music Award in 2007 for “We the People”.

Opening for Guitar Shorty will be International Blues Challenge winner JP Soars & the Red Hots. JP and his band bested over 100 bands in the 2009 International Blues Challenge, held by The Blues Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee. JP also won a custom Gibson guitar and a Category 5 amp for the Albert King Award for Most Promising Blues Guitarist. JP was raised in Cedarville, near Fayetteville, and looks forward to returning “home” for his first Arkansas performance.

On Friday, Grammy nominee, nine-time Blues Music Award nominee, four-time BMA winner and Blues Hall of Famer Hubert Sumlin will headline THE Auditorium. Raised in Hughes, Arkansas and after a stint in James Cotton’s band, at the age of 18 Hubert became Howlin’ Wolf’s guitarist. Sumlin’s licks are heard on hits like “Smokestack Lightnin’” and “Wang Dang Doodle”, and he has been cited by almost every major blues guitarist as one of their prime inspirations.

Sumlin has been a featured artist in Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festivals and appeared in the films “10 Days Out”, “Lightning in a Bottle” and “Cadillac Records”. Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stone’s Keith Richard appeared on Sumlin’s “About Them Shoes”, another testament to his influence on today’s guitar greats. Hubert will be backed by The Buddy Flett Band, who also appeared in “10 Days Out”, Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s road-trip documentary.

Opening for Sumlin will be Kory Montgomery & Isayah Warford, who represented the Ozarks Blues Society in the International Blues Challenge’s Solo/Duo competition. Also appearing will be Oreo Blue, who represented the Ozarks Blues Society in the International Blues Challenge’s Band competition.

Also on Friday, BMA nominee John Nemeth and BMA winner Deanna Bogart will perform in the 1905 Basin Park Hotel’s Barefoot Ballroom. Nemeth has wowed crowds around the world with great vocals and harp playing, and simply blew away the crowd on the King Biscuit stage with Anson Funderburg & the Rockets after the passing of harp legend Sam Meyers. Deanna Bogart is one of the most musically gifted ladies on the planet. A “quadruple threat”, Deanna sings, plays piano and saxophone, and writes great songs.

Saturday afternoon at THE Auditorium features Grammy and Blues Music Award winner and two-time Blues Hall of Famer David “Honeyboy” Edwards. Honeyboy is the last of the original Mississippi Delta Blues guitarists. Unlike guitarists like Eric Clapton who say Robert Johnson influenced their music, Honeyboy actually played with Johnson! Honeyboy's life has been intertwined with almost every major blues legend, including both Robert and Tommy Johnson, Charlie Patton, Big Joe Williams, Rice "Sonny Boy Williamson" Miller, Howlin' Wolf, Peetie Wheatstraw, Sunnyland Slim, Lightnin' Hopkins, Big Walter, Little Walter, Magic Sam, and Muddy Waters! In 1942, Alan Lomax recorded Honeyboy in Clarksdale, Mississippi for the Library of Congress. Since then, Honeyboy has recorded 14 albums and has appeared on 38 compilations, and has performed at hundreds of festivals around the world. Honeyboy also appeared as himself in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.

Opening for Honeyboy are EG Kight and Mary Flower. Both ladies are multiple Blues Music Award nominees, and are known around the world for their singing and songwriting. They will also perform sets in the Basin Park Hotel Ozark Room on Friday and Saturday evenings respectively.

Saturday will feature Multiple Grammy and Blues Music Award winner Joe Louis Walker. Joe Louis has been nominated for an astounding 39 Blues Music Awards, winning three times. Joe Louis is a true powerhouse guitar virtuoso, unique singer & prolific songwriter who has toured the world throughout his career and earned himself a legion of dedicated fans around the globe. He has recorded with the likes of BB King, James Cotton, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Huey Lewis, Branford Marsalis, Steve Cropper, Shemekia Copeland & Ike Turner, with a discography that counts 19 solo albums, 2 live DVD’s, and countless compilations and guest appearances.

Opening for Joe Louis Walker will be RJ Mischo’s Harp Meltdown, backed by Lee McBee & the Confessors. RJ has performed around the world, thrilling audiences with his mastery of the harmonica. Lee McBee is best known for his harp and vocal work with Mike Morgan and The Crawl, but shines on his own with one of the tightest bands in the Midwest, The Confessors.

Also appearing on Saturday in the Barefoot Ballroom will be Moreland & Arbuckle and BMA nominee Candye Kane. Fairly new to the festival scene, Moreland & Arbuckle’s latest CD “1861” was designated a “Pick to Click” on Bluesville. They have gained a large following with their Mississippi-style “Roots Blues” that are influenced by everyone from Little Walter to Led Zeppelin. Candye Kane has toured the world as part of RUF Records’ Blues Caravan, and is known for her outrageous costumes and high-energy shows.

Candye was scheduled to appear at last year’s Blues Weekend, but was unable to perform due to illness. Like many musicians, Candye didn’t have insurance to cover her medical bills, and the HART Fund helped pay them. We promised Candye she would get a “rain check” for this year’s Blues Weekend, and we are thrilled she is able to come and help raise money for the HART fund!

In addition to the headliner shows, there will be music in Basin Spring Park and at area clubs and restaurants.

Del Castillo comes to Eureka Springs -By David Hughes

“Once Upon a Time in Mexico” is on the television screen and I’m watching intently, getting involved in all the little sub-plots that are layered throughout the movie. In the background of the action on the screen, there is music, flamenco guitar actually. The eloquence of the music is darkly romantic and dances intimately with the rough landscape in the scenes it supports. It’s an intriguing mixture.

As usual, I found myself in search of the music behind the movie. My search led me to a band that has been hard at the business of music for a little over nine years. What I found was Del Castillo. Del Castillo creates its own intriguing mixture of flamenco, rock, Latin, blues and world music, having performed live since 2001 and racking up a list of accomplishments and awards most bands work a lifetime to achieve.

Arkansas will get an opportunity to hear this incredible band in Eureka Springs on May 8 at The Auditorium. Show time will be 8:00 p.m. with an opening act kicking off at 6:45 p.m.

Del Castillo came together in 2000 as the result of brothers Rick and Mark del Castillo doing an acoustic collaboration on Latin and flamenco songs for their parents. The brothers had been playing electric guitar separately in other bands and, in fact, had never played together. When guitarist/vocalist and good friend Alex Ruiz began adding words to the music it set in motion a force that would continue to be reckoned with nearly a decade later.

Blending a variety of musical styles while keeping a deep Latin influence, the band began performing live in 2001. Their first show in Austin, Texas, coincided with the release of their first CD, Brothers of the Castle. Both were met with outstanding reviews. Encouraged by the warm reception into the world of live music, Del Castillo began building a following around Austin. Their work paid off when they received the first of what would be many awards by getting the nod as Best Band in the categories of World Music and Mexican/Traditional Latin at the Austin Music Awards during SXSW in 2002.

Del Castillo’s follow up CD, Vida, would announce the band’s presence not only in Austin, but across the country. With authority. Del Castillo picked up seven major awards at the 2003 Austin Music Awards, including four awards for Vida as well as the coveted Band of the Year honors.

During this time, Del Castillo met filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. This meeting would put the band in the national spotlight. The filmmaker asked Rick del Castillo to provide guitar on the soundtrack of the film Spy Kids 3D: Game Over. Rodriguez would go on to produce the band’s critically acclaimed live DVD. The relationship with Rodriguez would continue with the brothers del Castillo and Ruiz contributing music to the film “Once Upon a Time in Mexico”.

Del Castillo performed at the premier of “Once Upon a Time in Mexico”, joined on stage during their performance by Rodriguez, Cheech Marin, Antonio Banderas and Patricia Vonne. Taking note of Del Castillo’s music was one Quentin Tarrantino who would use their music on the “Kill Bill” soundtrack. The band has won at least one major award at the Austin Music Awards every year since 2002 including Album of the Year in 2007 for their third release, Brotherhood.
Del Castillo continues to keep a busy dance card, with television and film performances to their credit and new film and music projects under construction. They have headlined and shared the stage with the likes of Los Lonely Boys, Ozomatli, Los Lobos, Kinky, deSol and others. The band has performed at a number of major festivals including three of Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic and Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival.

Eureka Springs and Arkansas are set for an amazing evening of music. The high powered energy and soul of Del Castillo will captivate listeners and leave them hungry for more . DEL CASTILLO has become a symbol of the cross-cultural power of music with their eclectic blend of Flamenco, Rock, Latin, Blues, and World music.

It all began in late 2000 when Rick and Mark del Castillo decided to put together an album of Latin/Flamenco-style songs for their parents and friends in their hometown of Brownsville, Texas. The brothers, who had always played electric guitar in separate rock bands, had never played together and for the first time ever they began collaborating on songs on acoustic guitars.

Their good friend, vocalist/guitarist Alex Ruiz, began adding lyrics to the brothers’ instrumentals, and soon after, the other band members joined them. After receiving positive and encouraging responses from everyone who heard the songs they created together, the project began to evolve into a real band. Del Castillo was born!

They began writing material fusing many styles and influences, all the while retaining a solid Latin element, and in late 2001 they decided to test the waters as a live performance band. They played their first show in Austin, Texas, where they all live, and simultaneously, they released their first CD, Brothers of the Castle. Both the performance and CD received rave reviews from fans and critics alike.

In early 2002, the Austin American Statesman wrote, “…For a band that played its first gig only six months ago, Del Castillo is, indeed, going places.” Encouraged by the immediate response and acceptance, they started playing regular shows in Austin and quickly built a following. In March of that year, they received the first of what would be many awards that would follow at the Austin Music Awards during South By Southwest – “Best World Music Band” and “Best Mexican/Traditional Latino Band.”

During that time, the band had met filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, and he was now studying guitar with Rick. He invited Rick to contribute guitar on the soundtrack of his film “Spy Kids 3D: Game Over,” and at the premier of the film in Austin in 2003 the band performed live with Robert joining Rick and Mark on guitar.

All the while, the band continued to write and record new songs, and in late 2002 they released their follow-up CD, Vida, which took them to the next level. The Austin Chronicle wrote, “…if Vida is proof, their road to fame will be as short as an I-35 entrance ramp.” Robert filmed the band’s performance at the CD release party for Vida for a live DVD.

By 2003, Del Castillo had become one of Austin’s most popular bands and they swept the Austin Music Awards that year, winning seven awards including “Band of the Year” and “Album of the Year” for Vida. They continued to work with Robert, and Rick, Mark, and Alex contributed music on his next film, “Once Upon a Time in Mexico.” In addition to the music, Alex appeared in the film. The premier for the film was held in New York that year and Del Castillo performed live, joined on stage by Robert, Antonio Banderas, Cheech Marin, and Patricia Vonne.

The Del Castillo LIVE DVD, filmed and edited by Robert Rodriguez, was released in early 2004. Also that year, Quentin Tarrantino used a Del Castillo song in “Kill Bill, Vol. 2,” performed by Chingon, Robert Rodriguez’ musical collective of some of his closest musical compadres, including members of Del Castillo. Del Castillo, with Robert, performed as Chingon at the premier of the film in Los Angeles.

By now, the band was performing with great success throughout Texas. They joined the roster of CAA in 2004, which opened the door for extensive touring across the country, playing shows with such artists as Ozomatli, Los Lonely Boys, Los Lobos, Kinky, deSol, and others. They toured non-stop through 2006. They performed at three of Willie Nelson’s 4th Of July Picnics, and at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival, and they have made numerous national and local TV appearances.

Brotherhood, the band’s third CD, was released in the Spring of 2006 and it was immediately acclaimed by the media across the board. Billboard Magazine said, “…Whether Del Castillo works in Spanish or English, it rocks righteously…They pull together Latin music’s romance and rock’s grit.” At SXSW 2007, Brotherhood won “Album of the Year” at the 2006/2007 Austin Music Awards. The band continues to tour throughout the country, thriving on performing live and building new audiences, and songwriting and recording are a priority during breaks in their tour schedule.

Eureka Springs to Celebrate Fat Tuesday in True New Orleans Style

Have your cake and eat it too; King Cake that is, right here in Arkansas. In true New Orleans style and with the help of a Hurricane Katrina transplant, Eureka Springs will begin its six day Mardi Gras celebration on Feb. 19.

Also known as Eureka Gras, the Mardi Gras events in Eureka Springs come with much foot stomping, umbrella pumping and handkerchief waving fanfare. New Orleans native Dan Ellis leads the way with an accent and a passion that do justice to the sound and meaning of the words “Laissez les bon temp roulez,” or “Let the Good Times Roll.”

Born and reared in New Orleans, Ellis said, “[Mardi Gras] is in my teeth, in my toes and in my nose.” He’s been involved in some of the biggest Krewes in Louisiana and Washington D.C. He was on the Krewe of Louisianans for 21 years and is a past member of the original Pete Fountain "Halfast Marchin' Club," which still spins its way through the New Orleans French Quarter each year. Uprooted from his home in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, Ellis made his way to Eureka Springs in November of 2005.

When he realized he was going to stay in Eureka Springs, he also recognized the need to get Mardi Gras celebrations going in earnest. “The first two years the money was mostly out of my own pocket,” Ellis explained. “Some people like fishing and golfing. I’d rather do parties.” And so, Ellis is in his fourth year of planning Mardi Gras. Each year he tries to expand his event offerings and broadcast the plans to more people.

“More and more people are catching the fire,” Ellis added. Mardi Gras literally means Fat Tuesday and describes a day of merrymaking on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. In New Orleans and many Roman Catholic countries, a week or more of parades and parties occur prior to the Tuesday celebration.

“I want people to realize they don’t have to go to New Orleans to get a New Orleans-style Mardi Gras,” Ellis said.

The Krewe of Krazo (Ozark spelled backwards) kicked off this year’s carnival season on Jan. 11 with a Kings Day Party at the Rowdy Beaver Restaurant and Tavern to announce the new court. Serving as King and Queen are Zeek Taylor and Elise Roenigk, both of Eureka Springs. Richard Davies, executive director of the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism, will serve as the 2009 grand marshal. Five dukes and duchesses fill out the rest of the court.

Activities for the royalty and public at large will run from Feb. 19 through Feb. 24.

The festivities will start with a new event, the Hookers and Jokers Ball. This masquerade ball is open to everyone dressing in a costume of the theme “Gay ‘90s,” “Guys and Dolls,” or “Freakin' Eurekan.” The event will begin at 6 p.m., Feb. 19 at the Inn of the Ozarks Best Western Convention Center. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

“We’ll have a good New Orleans-style jazz band and two vocalists, one from the Mobile area and the other from Houston. Those are good strong jazz vocalists that will belt out some good jazz music,” Ellis said. “And we’ll have some local folks to mix it up so everyone has a little fun.”

The Coronation Ball and Masquerade Dance will start at 6 p.m., Feb. 20 at the Crescent Hotel and is by reservation only. The ball will include the grand procession of the royal court, entertainment by Big Sound Music and a champagne supper buffet for $25.

A Mardi Gras Parade is set for 2 p.m., Feb. 21. Anyone that is in costume can join in the parade. Lead by the Krewe of Krazo, the parade theme is “Art Whirl & All That Jazz.” Other walking groups include: Krewe of Wobniar with the theme “Rainbow Whirl” and Krewe of Barkus, consisting of canines, with the theme “K-9 Munchkins.”

The parade route will be Spring Street to South Main Street, to North Main Street, ending at The Art Colony. The annual Krazo Kostume Kontest will take place at 3:30 p.m. at The Art Colony with cash prizes awarded for best costume.

Rowdy JazzFest will take place at 7 p.m., Feb. 21 at Rowdy Beaver Restaurant and Tavern. Featuring music by Jane and Shane, the jam sessions will include jazz, blues and rock ballads.

The Crescent Jazz Trio will play from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 22 during the Jazz Brunch at the 1886 Crescent Hotel. Champagne and a buffet brunch will be served at a cost of $25. Reservations are recommended and may be made by phoning 479-253-9766.

At 5 p.m. that evening there will be more jazz and blues music at the New Delhi restaurant.

From 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Feb. 24, King Cake and punch will be served in the lobby of the Community First Bank. From 4:30 until 7:30 p.m. on the 24th there will be a pancake supper at the Best Western Eureka Inn Gazebo Restaurant.

Mardi Gras festivities will end on Fat Tuesday, Feb. 24 with a pub crawl of people in extravagant, gaudy, colorful and festive attire. The Second Line Krazo Bar Krawl will begin at 4 p.m. at the Pied Piper and wend its way down the street stopping for special drinks and snacks at each pub along the way until reaching Chelsea’s. Costumes and/or masks are a must for those interested in participating.

Ellis’ goal is to have the longest second line in the world with the hopes of officially challenging New Orleans in future years.

Ellis said those interested in participating in the Mardi Gras festivities should bring their own costumes because there is no easy place to rent masks or costumes. A new year is upon us here in Eureka Springs! We've been very busy in the Special Events Office planning entertainment for the 2009 season. Music in Basin Spring Park starts in April every Saturday from Noon until 6pm and Sunday from noon until 4pm. Then starting in May we add music to Friday from noon until 6pm.

Starting in May we are also bringing back Dance in the Park After Dark two times a month! We will release the dates for the dances soon enough! Of course there will be Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day in Basin Spring Park as well.

In May we have some very special events planned! The Theme this year is World Cultural Arts and each week has a different theme:

Week 1: May 1st through May 10th is Spanish, South American and Native American influence. Crafters in the Park and music will be themed with this Spanish influence flare!

Week 2: May 11th through 17th is African influence with drummers and dancers in Basin Spring Park. The weekend of the 15th, 16th and 17th is also a Kids themed weekend in Basin Spring Park with many activities scheduled for the youngsters!

Week 3: May 18th through 25th is World Culture and will encompass Arts, crafts and music from all over the world.

Week4: May 26th through 31st is Americana influence with Eureka Springs Blues Weekend and Americana Arts and Crafts in Basin Spring Park.

May also sees our first two Dance in the Park After Dark scheduled for May 1st and May 15th.

On May 8th in the AUD Internationally Touring Act Del Castillo will be gracing the stage with their blend of Flamenco/Jazz/Blues/Rock music. Tickets will be on sale very soon!

Sewing For Beginners

It’s Just Around The Corner.. Eureka Springs Folk Festival!!!

The four day 61st Annual Ozark Original Folk Festival runs from November 6-9, 2008. Our host will be the talented Greg Kylma.

Greg Kylma, a January baby, born in Buffalo, NY on his father's bowling night, is the son of a garbage man. Greg grew up in a blue collar town with a blue collar work ethic and an appreciation of blue collar fun. In August 1998, Klyma took that ethic out on the road, honing his songwriting, storytelling, musicianship, and presentation at venues and festivals across the US.

A solid decade of traveling, performing and chewing on life are reflected in Rust Belt Vagabond's central theme of truth. Greg explores the Tale of Two Brothers, post-Katrina New Orleans, the history of Buffalo, NY and personal truth - his own shortcomings, the way we depend on each other and the healing power of love.

Recorded in studios from Austin, TX and Durham, NC to home studios scattered about the northeast US, Rust Belt Vagabond features two songs co-written with friend Jonathan Byrd, a fresh new version of "Erie Canal," and performances by, among others, Byrd, Tom Bianchi, Sick and Anthony da Costa.

Greg Klyma is the Rust Belt Vagabond - a folk troubadour with a rock 'n' roll heart, a home-cooked meal and a Vaudeville show in a fast-food, karaoke world. Simply put, Greg Klyma is an entertainer… and he's got songs. Lots of them. Wow!!! Did you get a chance to visit Eureka Springs last week? The falls colors are popping out by the moment, maybe they were inspired by the seemingly non-stop music of last week.

On Thursday evening, The Maybelles brought our Americana House series to a close with a standing room only concert at the Gavioli Chapel.
Fans of the Americana House Concerts series, remember that while our season has come to a close. The Unitarian Church, located on 17 Elk Street is just staring their fall House concerts. Terri Hendrix, will be back by popular demand on October 22 and Mollie O'Brien and Rich Moore Will be performing on November 19th. If you are a fan of NPR's Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion than you will probably recognize Mollie's smoky vocals as part of the Hopeful Gospel Quartet. Doors open at 7:00pm.

Friday night, Guy Forysth of Austin, Texas fame brought to a close the Last Dance in the Park of the season. More than one person commented. "Wow – I have a new favorite band!!!"

Downtown was packed Saturday, and everyone who stopped by for to see the Ozone Players and Cletus Got Shot at this weekend's Free Music In Basin Spring Park was treated to not one but two surprise Sneak Previews by Beatlegras, who performed in The Auditorium Saturday evening to an enthusiastic audience.

The Free Music in Basin Park continues through the month of October, ending the week ending this week end with Steve Jones & Arkansas Red as well as The Awesome Possums on Saturday the 25th. Pearl Brick followed by Jeff Lee will be performing on Sunday the 26th.

THE MAYBELLES To Close Americana House Concerts Season

The Maybelles will bring to a close Eureka Springs 2008 Americana House Concert Season. They will be performing Thursday October 16th, at 7:00pm at the Gavioli Chapel. The Gavioli Chapel is located at 80 Mountain Street. Admission is $10.00/

The Maybelles began several years ago right here in Eureka Springs when Melissa Carper and Jan Bell met and started playing music together. As a duo playing New Orleans where they first appeared as The Maybelles, New Orleans City Life magazine ranked them among the Top 10 of the city's music acts.

While performing in New York they added Katy Rose Cox to make them a trio.

Chuck Eddy, Senior Music Editor at the Village Voice, rated the group's debut album White Trash Jenny among his favorite Top Ten Folk Albums. He described them as, "An EXPERT BAND. Celtic tinged, Appalachian influenced.

Mikael Wood, who also writes for the Village Voice, characterized the band's efforts as, "A triumph for equal opportunity bluegrassers, never once sinks into mere bluegrass reverence." And Time Out NY magazine gave them a coveted Recommended rating with the comment, "Don't Miss The Maybelles."

They didn't miss them in London either. Charlie Gillett of the British Broadcasting Corporation [BBC] said, "Of all the music the 'Be Good Tanya's' gave me, my favorite is The Maybelles. They sound like they might be granddaughters of country greats." Interesting comment in that Jan Bell grew up in Nottinghamshire, England.

Jerome Clark who frequently writes with actor Robin Williams and Williams' wife, Linda, wrote on Rambles.net, "Freshness bordering on wonder.''

Donice Woodside, writing for Nightflying, described them as "Musical geniuses in mutual motion.''

Susan Porter, in the Fayetteville Free Weekly says they're an "Upbeat and charming Americana trio."

According to Mike Shirkey of KUAF Radio, "They've got it all. Good writing. Good voices. Good sound. If you haven't seen The Maybelles in a while, you're in for a surprise."

This is a songwriter's band. Performing Songwriter magazine selected White Trash Jenny for its annual Top 12 DIY picks. They described the album as "chock-full of good old fashioned fun -- groping, incest and stints in jail." The title track tells the story of a free-spirited woman who chose a life of crime and time in jail over life in a trailer park, "having kids and being someone's wife."

The Maybelles have been invited to perform at the International Bluegrass Music Awards in Nashville this year. And Jan Bell has won the popular vote for Independent Music Awards Alternative Country Album of the Year for her Songs For Love Drunk Sinners as performed by Jan Bell + the Cheap Dates.

We are still accepting submissions for the 61st Annual Ozark Folk Festival Songwriter Contest. Submissions can be made through the mail or through Sonic Bids. Congratulations to Melissa Carper of the Mountain Sprouts and The Maybelles

Melissa Carper was named the Eureka Springs. COW- Citizen of the Week, by the Lovely County Citizen. In a wonderful article that reads.. "When it comes to good vibes, they don't get any better than the ones put out by Melissa carper, just ask any musician in town. Ask any dancer, writer, artist or lost soul in town and we'll all tell you she played a benefit for us in our hour of need. She created a 'summer bass camp" for a young girl who was new in town and having a hard time meeting kids to play with. Melissa taught her how to play the stand up bass. Before long the girl was jammin' with some of Eureka's top cats. She's truly the drive train of the Eureka Sound."
