22nd Annual May Festival of the Arts Yard Art

“Art of the World” is this year’s theme. Professional Artist and Non-Professional Artist are the two categories, and you must choose a country or region to be portrayed in your design.



Entry forms are available at THE Auditorium Monday through Friday from 9:00am until 5:00p.m. All forms must be filled out and returned to THE Auditorium no later than April 3rd, 2009 by 5:00p.m. Art must be installed and ready for judging no later than April 30th, 2009 and must remain up throughout the entire month of May.



Winners will be announced Saturday May 2nd, 2009 at Basin Spring Park during the ARTrageous Parade. $300 first place, $200 second place and $100 third place will be awarded to winners in each category.



If you would like to donate the use of your yard for art, please come by and fill out an application and we will set you up with an artist that has no yard! If you have any questions please feel free to give us a call at 479.253.2586 or send us an e-mail to basinspringart@gmail.com




ARTrageous Parade

The ARTrageous marching, dancing, skipping, riding or otherwise tumbling down Spring Street takes place on Saturday, May 2nd 2009.



This year’s theme is “Art of the World”. Cash prizes of $300 for First Place, $200 for Second Place and $100 for Third Place will be awarded.



Registration forms may be obtained at THE Auditorium M-F from 9-5. All registration forms MUST be turned in no later than 5:00p.m. on Friday, April 17th 2009. If you have questions please feel free to call the Special Events Office at 479.253.2586. basinspringart@gmail.com.



22nd Annual May Festival of the Arts: Art in Basin Spring Park

This year the juried Art in the Park will include all five weekends in May. With the backdrop of FREE music and entertainment in Basin Spring Park, every weekend in May on Friday, Saturday and Sunday Memorial Day Monday will feature a mini Art show.



Booth space is limited to 10x10 and you must provide your own tent. All items being sold must be handmade and juried in. Demonstrations of your art and/or craft are strongly encouraged. There is no application fee. The booth fee is $25 per weekend. Each Sunday (Monday of Memorial Day Weekend) we will award a $50 People’s Choice Award to one of the Artists in the park, this is where demonstrating will help you out!



The deadline for submissions is 5:00p.m. Friday, April 3rd 2009. If you would like to be considered for setting up in Basin Spring Park Stop by THE Auditorium and pick up an application. “Garden of the Season” Competition

The Eureka Springs Garden Club encourages all homeowners and businesses to plan for spring planting and to think about entering the Garden’s Club’s spring “Garden of the Season” competition in April. “Cool Clear Water”

Eureka songstresses will come together for the first time to present an evening of vocal stylings and harmonizing to benefit Clear Spring School. Karen Fitzpatrick of the Ariels; Opal Fly, along with her sax; Pearl Brick and Denise Lanuti, both of Folk fame; Jane Tucker of Greasy Greens; and Loretta Crenshaw, local songbird, will form (for one-night-only) the super-group “Cool Clear Water”. Souper Soup – Eureka Springs Historical Museum Fundraiser

The annual event takes place following the Victorian Classic race from 11AM to 1:00PM at the Eureka Springs High School cafeteria, located across the street from the race finish, at the Inn of the Ozarks. Tickets are just $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for children under 12. Ticket price includes two bowls of soup of your choice (over 12 varieties prepared by area restaurants), cornbread, beverage and choice of dessert (prepared by area Bed & Breakfast inns). Grassy Knob Firehouse Chili Day

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Grassy Knob Volunteer Fire Department will hold its “Chili Day” from noon until 7PM at its Community Center, 12307 Hwy. 187. Proceeds will benefit the fire department. The menu includes chili, homemade desserts, coffee and tea. Chicken noodle soup will be offered as an alternative to chili. Adults-$5.00; Children under 12 $3.00. Sponsored by the 1905 Basin Park Hotel, the 2009 Eureka Springs Blues Weekend will feature Guitar Shorty, Hubert Sumlin & the Buddy Flett Band and Joe Louis Walker headlining evening shows in THE Auditorium May 28, 29 & 30 respectively. For acoustic guitar lovers, we have Delta Blues legend David "Honeyboy" Edwards headlining a special "Acoustic Afternoon at THE Auditorium" on Saturday, May 30th. Shows will also be held throughout the weekend in the 1905 Basin Park Hotel's Barefoot Ballroom and Ozark Room, Basin Spring Park, and at various venues around Eureka Springs.

This year's Blues Weekend will be a fundraiser for The Blues Foundation's Handy Artist Relief Trust and Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. The HART fund provides assistance to musicians in need, including acute, chronic & preventive medical & dental care, as well as funeral expenses. For more information, please visit www.Blues.org. Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is located seven miles south of Eureka Springs on Highway 23. It provides lifetime refuge to abandoned, abused, and neglected "Big Cats", with emphasis on tigers, lions, leopards, and cougars. ESBW Producer Charles "Rags" Ragsdell and his wife Lori have been supporters of both organizations for over a decade. As volunteers, they help produce the Eureka Springs Blues Weekend and several other music events. Rags is also a Charter Member of The Blues Foundation, and a member of Turpentine Creek's Board of Directors.

Other headliners appearing in The Auditorium and the 1905 Basin Park Hotel Barefoot Ballroom include EG Kight, Moreland & Arbuckle, Mary Flower, RJ Mischo, Lee McBee & the Confessors, Deanna Bogart and John Nemeth. Also, International Blues Challenge winner JP Soars & the Red Hots and Ozarks Blues Society Blues Challenge winners Oreo Blue and Kory Montgomery & Isayah Warford will be opening acts.

Thursday evening at THE Auditorium will feature Guitar Shorty. Six-time Blues Music Award nominee Guitar Shorty started his professional career at the tender age of 16, playing for Ray Charles. He recorded his first single under the direction of Willie Dixon the next year, and went on to play with greats such as T-Bone Walker, Big Joe Turner, Little Richard and Sam Cooke. Since then, Guitar Shorty has headlined festivals around the world, and won the Contemporary Album Blues Music Award in 2007 for "We the People".

Opening for Guitar Shorty will be International Blues Challenge winner JP Soars & the Red Hots. JP and his band bested over 100 bands in the 2009 International Blues Challenge, held by The Blues Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee. JP also won a custom Gibson guitar and a Category 5 amp for the Albert King Award for Most Promising Blues Guitarist. JP was raised in Cedarville, near Fayetteville, and looks forward to returning "home" for his first Arkansas performance.

On Friday, Grammy nominee, nine-time Blues Music Award nominee, four-time BMA winner and Blues Hall of Famer Hubert Sumlin will headline THE Auditorium. Raised in Hughes, Arkansas and after a stint in James Cotton's band, at the age of 18 Hubert became Howlin' Wolf's guitarist. Sumlin's licks are heard on hits like "Smokestack Lightnin'" and "Wang Dang Doodle", and he has been cited by almost every major blues guitarist as one of their prime inspirations.

Sumlin has been a featured artist in Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festivals and appeared in the films "10 Days Out", "Lightning in a Bottle" and "Cadillac Records". Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stone's Keith Richard appeared on Sumlin's "About Them Shoes", another testament to his influence on today's guitar greats. Hubert will be backed by The Buddy Flett Band, who also appeared in "10 Days Out", Kenny Wayne Shepherd's road-trip documentary.

Opening for Sumlin will be Kory Montgomery & Isayah Warford, who represented the Ozarks Blues Society in the International Blues Challenge's Solo/Duo competition. Also appearing will be Oreo Blue, who represented the Ozarks Blues Society in the International Blues Challenge's Band competition.

Also on Friday, BMA nominee John Nemeth and BMA winner Deanna Bogart will perform in the 1905 Basin Park Hotel's Barefoot Ballroom. Nemeth has wowed crowds around the world with great vocals and harp playing, and simply blew away the crowd on the King Biscuit stage with Anson Funderburg & the Rockets after the passing of harp legend Sam Meyers. Deanna Bogart is one of the most musically gifted ladies on the planet. A "quadruple threat", Deanna sings, plays piano and saxophone, and writes great songs.

Saturday afternoon at THE Auditorium features Grammy and Blues Music Award winner and two-time Blues Hall of Famer David "Honeyboy" Edwards. Honeyboy is the last of the original Mississippi Delta Blues guitarists. Unlike guitarists like Eric Clapton who say Robert Johnson influenced their music, Honeyboy actually played with Johnson! Honeyboy's life has been intertwined with almost every major blues legend, including both Robert and Tommy Johnson, Charlie Patton, Big Joe Williams, Rice "Sonny Boy Williamson" Miller, Howlin' Wolf, Peetie Wheatstraw, Sunnyland Slim, Lightnin' Hopkins, Big Walter, Little Walter, Magic Sam, and Muddy Waters! In 1942, Alan Lomax recorded Honeyboy in Clarksdale, Mississippi for the Library of Congress. Since then, Honeyboy has recorded 14 albums and has appeared on 38 compilations, and has performed at hundreds of festivals around the world. Honeyboy also appeared as himself in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.

Opening for Honeyboy are EG Kight and Mary Flower. Both ladies are multiple Blues Music Award nominees, and are known around the world for their guitar playing, singing, and songwriting. They will also perform sets in the Basin Park Hotel Ozark Room on Friday and Saturday evenings respectively.

Saturday will feature Multiple Grammy and Blues Music Award winner Joe Louis Walker. Joe Louis has been nominated for an astounding 39 Blues Music Awards, winning three times. Joe Louis is a true powerhouse guitar virtuoso, unique singer & prolific songwriter who has toured the world throughout his career and earned himself a legion of dedicated fans around the globe. He has recorded with the likes of BB King, James Cotton, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Huey Lewis, Branford Marsalis, Steve Cropper, Shemekia Copeland & Ike Turner, with a discography that counts 19 solo albums, 2 live DVD's, and countless compilations and guest appearances.

Opening for Joe Louis Walker will be RJ Mischo backed by Lee McBee & the Confessors. RJ Mischo has performed around the world, thrilling audiences with his mastery of the harmonica. Lee McBee is best known for his harp and vocal work with Mike Morgan and The Crawl, but shines on his own with one of the tightest bands in the Midwest, The Confessors. These two gifted front men will take turns entertaining the audience, then will come together at the end for some “head cutting” in what can best be described as a “harp meltdown”!

Also appearing on Saturday in the Barefoot Ballroom will be Moreland & Arbuckle and BMA nominee Candye Kane. Fairly new to the festival scene, Moreland & Arbuckle's latest CD "1861" was designated a "Pick to Click" on Bluesville. They have gained a large following with their Mississippi-style "Roots Blues" that are influenced by everyone from Little Walter to Led Zeppelin. Candye Kane has toured the world as part of RUF Records' Blues Caravan, and is known for her outrageous costumes and high-energy shows.

Candye was scheduled to appear at last year's Blues Weekend, but was unable to perform due to illness. Like many musicians, Candye didn't have insurance to cover her medical bills, and the HART Fund helped pay them. We promised Candye she would get a "rain check" for this year's Blues Weekend, and we are thrilled she is able to come and help raise money for the HART fund!

Also, internationally acclaimed blues photographer David Horowitz will exhibit his photography, and will conduct a performance photography workshop on Saturday morning. Horowitz’s award winning photographs include over four decades of blues greats, everyone from Katie Webster to Albert Collins to Stevie Ray Vaughn to today’s rising stars. If you have attended any major blues festival, more than likely you have seen David shooting from the side of the stage.

In addition to the headliner shows and photo exhibition, there will be music in Basin Spring Park and at area clubs and restaurants.

Del Castillo in Eureka Springs, AR!

“Once Upon a Time in Mexico” is on the television screen and I’m watching intently, getting involved in all the little sub-plots that are layered throughout the movie. In the background of the action on the screen, there is music, flamenco guitar actually. The eloquence of the music is darkly romantic and dances intimately with the rough landscape in the scenes it supports. It’s an intriguing mixture.

As usual, I found myself in search of the music behind the movie. My search led me to a band that has been hard at the business of music for a little over nine years. What I found was Del Castillo. Del Castillo creates its own intriguing mixture of flamenco, rock, Latin, blues and world music, having performed live since 2001 and racking up a list of accomplishments and awards most bands work a lifetime to achieve.

Arkansas will get an opportunity to hear this incredible band in Eureka Springs on May 8 at The Auditorium. Show time will be 8:00 p.m. with an opening act kicking off at 6:45 p.m.

Del Castillo came together in 2000 as the result of brothers Rick and Mark del Castillo doing an acoustic collaboration on Latin and flamenco songs for their parents. The brothers had been playing electric guitar separately in other bands and, in fact, had never played together. When guitarist/vocalist and good friend Alex Ruiz began adding words to the music it set in motion a force that would continue to be reckoned with nearly a decade later.

Blending a variety of musical styles while keeping a deep Latin influence, the band began performing live in 2001. Their first show in Austin, Texas, coincided with the release of their first CD, Brothers of the Castle. Both were met with outstanding reviews. Encouraged by the warm reception into the world of live music, Del Castillo began building a following around Austin. Their work paid off when they received the first of what would be many awards by getting the nod as Best Band in the categories of World Music and Mexican/Traditional Latin at the Austin Music Awards during SXSW in 2002.

Del Castillo’s follow up CD, Vida, would announce the band’s presence not only in Austin, but across the country. With authority. Del Castillo picked up seven major awards at the 2003 Austin Music Awards, including four awards for Vida as well as the coveted Band of the Year honors.

During this time, Del Castillo met filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. This meeting would put the band in the national spotlight. The filmmaker asked Rick del Castillo to provide guitar on the soundtrack of the film Spy Kids 3D: Game Over. Rodriguez would go on to produce the band’s critically acclaimed live DVD. The relationship with Rodriguez would continue with the brothers del Castillo and Ruiz contributing music to the film “Once Upon a Time in Mexico”.

Del Castillo performed at the premier of “Once Upon a Time in Mexico”, joined on stage during their performance by Rodriguez, Cheech Marin, Antonio Banderas and Patricia Vonne. Taking note of Del Castillo’s music was one Quentin Tarrantino who would use their music on the “Kill Bill” soundtrack. The band has won at least one major award at the Austin Music Awards every year since 2002 including Album of the Year in 2007 for their third release, Brotherhood.
Del Castillo continues to keep a busy dance card, with television and film performances to their credit and new film and music projects under construction. They have headlined and shared the stage with the likes of Los Lonely Boys, Ozomatli, Los Lobos, Kinky, deSol and others. The band has performed at a number of major festivals including three of Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic and Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival.

Eureka Springs and Arkansas are set for an amazing evening of music. The high powered energy and soul of Del Castillo will captivate listeners and leave them hungry for more . 2009 is HERE!!! Eureka Springs!

A new year is upon us here in Eureka Springs! We've been very busy in the Special Events Office planning entertainment for the 2009 season. Music in Basin Spring Park starts in April every Saturday from Noon until 6pm and Sunday from noon until 4pm. Then starting in May we add music to Friday from noon until 6pm.

Starting in May we are also bringing back Dance in the Park After Dark two times a month! We will release the dates for the dances soon enough! Of course there will be Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day in Basin Spring Park as well.

In May we have some very special events planned! The Theme this year is World Cultural Arts and each week has a different theme:

Week 1: May 1st through May 10th is Spanish, South American and Native American influence. Crafters in the Park and music will be themed with this Spanish influence flare!

Week 2: May 11th through 17th is African influence with drummers and dancers in Basin Spring Park. The weekend of the 15th, 16th and 17th is also a Kids themed weekend in Basin Spring Park with many activities scheduled for the youngsters!

Week 3: May 18th through 25th is World Culture and will encompass Arts, crafts and music from all over the world.

Week4: May 26th through 31st is Americana influence with Eureka Springs Blues Weekend and Americana Arts and Crafts in Basin Spring Park.

May also sees our first two Dance in the Park After Dark scheduled for May 1st and May 15th.

On May 8th in the AUD Internationally Touring Act Del Castillo will be gracing the stage with their blend of Flamenco/Jazz/Blues/Rock music. Tickets will be on sale very soon!

The 18th annual White Street Studio Walk on Historic White Street is the working address of several local artists who will welcome the public into homes and studios to view their latest works. They will be joined by more than fifty guest artists, most from the Eureka Springs area, who will show weaving, watercolors, jewelry, oils, pottery, stained glass and much more.

Among those displaying will be 15-year show veterans; weaver, Eleanor Lux; watercolorist, Zeek Taylor; and painters John Willer and Mary Springer. The four are the walk's organizers and all by coincidence ended up living on White Street after attending the Memphis College of Art. Lux, who has lived on the street for many years, saw the opportunity of fulfilling her dream of the walk as the other artists moved into the neighborhood.

Besides the attraction of art, the event draws crowds who delight in experiencing a "hidden" Eureka Springs where they can visit with artists in their private spaces. "White Street and the surrounding blocks have a very high concentration of working artists", says Taylor. "I can stand on my front porch and look in any direction and see their homes/studios and know that creativity abounds in this part of town". Those attending get a sense of neighborhood in an area of town that is primarily residential.

One of Eureka Springs' most popular events, the White Street Studio Walk is attended by those seeking art while enjoying the street fair atmosphere combined with refreshments and music. Turquoise flags will identify participating locations. White Street is on the upper historic loop, not far from the Crescent Hotel. The event is FREE to the public.

May18th we will have a Kids Day in Basin Spring Park where the kids will have a chance to make mosaics, paint, and dance with the assistance of local artist. The music will start at noon with Catherine Reed Followed by the Hogscalders, Jeff Kearney and a solo by the wonderful Lany. Everyone is invited so come out and get creative with us!

Eureka Springs is the place for music and art! We have lots of great things coming up this year! We will be starting the year off with FREE music in Basin Spring Park Saturday and Sunday afternoons beginning April 19th. We will also be having free Boogies in Basin Park after Dark once a month throughout the summer.

May Festival of the Arts celebration begins, May 1st join us in Basin Spring Park for a our a special Kick-Off Party in the Park with music, featuring the Hogscalders, Jones Van Jones, Jeff Lee. That evening join us at the 1901 Gavioli Chapel for our first Americana House Concert featuring Noah Earle, an International Blues Challenge soloist nominee and winner of the solo category of Kansas City Blues Challenge, performing his newest Folk creations. May 3rd brings us more music in Basin Spring Park as well as our ARTragous parade starting at 2 pm. The theme of the parade this year is "Springs of Inspiration". In the past this parade has included 40ft. high puppets, a variety of musical performances, with drumming, African Dancing and Belly Dancers, highly creative floats, and artistically inspired costumes.

We also have Yard Art and Spring Art competitions decorating our quaint little town with outrageous displays all around and at the springs. We are also very proud to present our featured singer/ writer Kinky Friedman is a political satirist, known for his outrageous and irreverent larger-than-life persona, who will be playing at our City Auditorium May 10th at 8 pm. He will have a book signing and reception after the show in the Gem, located below the Auditorium. That same weekend in Basin Spring Park we will have the high flying Aeriel Angels who will soar, contort, and eat fire for all who wish to see. This is a Free event to all!

John Two-Hawks will be playing a Mother’s Day matinee at 2 pm on May 11th, at the City Auditorium. He is known for his evolutionary work with Native American flute music, taking it to a new level of world appreciation and respect. May 16th is the 18th annual White Street Studio Walk, where the artists welcome the public into their homes and studio’s to view their latest works. As well as fifty guest artists who set up along the street to show their weaving, watercolors, jewelry, pottery, oils, stained glass and more. This is an event embraced by the whole community bringing all the locals out to intermingle with the tourist and artist in a big street party manor with music and refreshments.

May 17th we will have a wonderful Art in the Park display featuring twelve artist chosen for a special juried art show in Basin Spring Park. May 20th we will have our second Americana House Concert at the Gavioli featuring John Elliott and Raina Rose. John Elliott’s music has been called "post-Seinfeld, post-9/11, eyebrow rock" and his songwriting has garnered comparisons to Paul Simon (among others) in the press. Raina Rose "is everything a young female folksinger should be" according to Jeff Rosenberg, Willamette Week, May ’07. May 23rd through the 26th you can see the magical comedy of Bobby Maverick FREE in Basin Spring Park. Part comedy, part nonsense but all magic, Maverick has created a scene all over the world with his show.

As if all this is not enough, we will also be having our Art Car & Skateboard Festival for Memorial Day weekend. These amazing cars can be seen all around town as they tour to different locations and then on the 24th starting at 2 pm there will be a parade of all the cars through down town Eureka Springs. On the 26th we send out the ARTragous month of May with an old-fashioned all-American potluck picnic at Lake Leatherwood. Everyone is invited! Bring food and drink. Decorate your canoe, kayak, or boat to bring the art out on the water with us for this celebration of all those who have fought for our freedom to express ourselves with art, speech, and choice of religion.

We had the best time this weekend... Were you there?

We had live music in Basin Spring Park Saturday and Sunday for the "Art in the Park" event as part of the May Festival of the Arts.

We got to hear a lot of Eureka talent, some for the first time: Don O'Barr, Mountain Sprout, Maureen Alexander, Catherine Reed, Brent Pierce, and M.A.B (the Maia Archote Band).

Artists, jewlers, shrine builders, flute makers, had tents set up to sell their work in the park, while Sunday Market rocked down the stairs across the street, and the Art Colony on North Main had music and festivities as well.

The weather was beautiful and people were all having a great time. The MC was witty and informative.

Not there? Don't worry, we'll be down there with live, local musical talent every weekend for the rest of the year. Because we love our community of musicians and performers.

2008 May Fine Art Poster Contest

?Are you reading this blog just in time to enter the poster contest? We sure hope so…because one of the fun things about this contest is that you, the artist, can choose whatever theme moves you; from Flowers down Spring Street, to ladybugs on kittens noses, or even hot steamy road-kill.

Okay maybe NOT road-kill (but you can eat at the Road-Kill café on Hwy 62!)

Anything that represents the Arts in Eureka, with a springtime bent.

The Poster contest is one of the most fun competitions for artists in Eureka (and is open to Everyone!)

Here are the guidelines:

The piece you submit should be at least 11"x17", and framed or matted for display. The medium you use is, again, your choice.

The deadline for the 2008 May Fine Arts Poster Contest is set for April 16, 2007.

Your piece will be on display for public viewing from that date until June 11th. (We're not sure where the display will be yet—the library, Caribe's, Wagon Wheel—but stay tuned, you'll know as soon as I know, ya know?)

This year the choosen poster artist will receive $500 (yep, five hun'red smackers!) and we will retain the right to use it for one year. In addition to the big bucks, the Artist will be our Grand Marshal in the 2008 ARTrageous Parade!
