Spring Street Sweethearts!!!

Eureka Springs Sweethearts Day Celebrates Suffragette Anniversary

– If suffragette Charlotte Woodward were alive to see "Spring Street Sweethearts Day" in Eureka Springs on September 1, 2007, she would be proud all over again. 87 years ago this week she cast her first vote proudly when women won the vote throughout the nation. The First Annual Spring Street Sweethearts Day in Eureka Springs celebrates the anniversary with an entire day of free women's music and art in the park.

The celebration, free and open to the public, is from 10 am until 6 pm in Basin Spring Park in historic downtown Eureka Springs. Visitors can see the paintings, glass work and sculptures of local female artists and watch them at their craft. The artists include Lindy Ray, Fran Carlin, Laura Waters, Jamie Froelich, Barb Kerbox, Paula Tyndale, Katie Keck, Vickie Rose, Carol Saari, Ginger Crump and Elizabeth Wolf.

The music begins at 11 am and includes nationally known singers such as Sarah Hughes and Susan Shore as well as local favorites Catherine Reed, Emily Kaitz and Opal Fly.

Sarah Hughes is no stranger to fans of music in the Ozarks. She was recently named 2007 Female Singer/Songwriter of the Year at the Northwest Arkansas Music Awards. Previous awards from the same organization include Band, Album, and Female Vocalist of the Year. The Ozark Music Awards have similarly smiled on Ms. Hughes, naming her Folk Artist, Songwriter, Female Vocalist, Folk Band, and Performer of the Year between 2004 and 2006.

Susan Shore is similarly nationally known and an engagingly offbeat performer. A native of Iowa, she now makes her home in Northwest Arkansas. Shore is a "songwriter with rare depth and wisdom who can successfully relate her own Midwestern experiences to a wide, diverse audience," according to the Daily Iowan.

In case of rain the event will move to The Gem (lower level of the City Auditorium.) For information on Spring Street Sweethearts Day, call 479-253-2586 or 888-855-7823. For details on Eureka Springs tourism, call 866-947-4387 or go online at www.eurekasprings.org.
