Congratulations to Melissa Carper of Mountain Sprout & The Maybelles

Congratulations to Melissa Carper of the Mountain Sprouts and The Maybelles

Melissa Carper was named the Eureka Springs. COW- Citizen of the Week, by the Lovely County Citizen. In a wonderful article that reads.. "When it comes to good vibes, they don't get any better than the ones put out by Melissa carper, just ask any musician in town. Ask any dancer, writer, artist or lost soul in town and we'll all tell you she played a benefit for us in our hour of need. She created a 'summer bass camp" for a young girl who was new in town and having a hard time meeting kids to play with. Melissa taught her how to play the stand up bass. Before long the girl was jammin' with some of Eureka's top cats. She's truly the drive train of the Eureka Sound."

To sample some of the Mountain Sprouts click http://mountainsprout.angelfire.com and The Maybelles can be heard here http://www.themaybellesmusic.com . The Mountain Sprouts will be playing in Basin Spring Park, this Saturday September 27 at 2:00pm. The Maybelles will be performing out Americana House Concerts series at the Gavioli Chapel Thursday October 16, 2008.

And then it was Autumn

It seemed as the week end couldn't wait to begin, as Friday evenings Dance in the Park after Dark started with a WOW and just kept on until it had become one of those magical Eureka nights our locals speak about and visitors come to experience. The opening WOW came from Rev. Payton's Big Damn Band, it was the first time many had heard them play and play they did with an energy that seemed to jump down from the band shell to literally pick up an entire park full of friends and neighbors up out of their seats and on to their feet.

Trout Fishing in America's Keith Grimwood, choose to spend his birthday entertaining Eureka Springs and so into the night they played.

Saturday in Basin Spring Park we saw performances by Jeff Lee, Pope County Bootleggers, The Hogscalders, the Awesome Possums and Cajon Sol. Followed by Sunday's shows with Brent Pierce & Fred Mayer, Susan Shore, Effron White, Paul Boatright and Kosmik Debriz. And then it was Autumn and here's wishing a wonderful season to all.

Dance In The Park After Dark

TONIGHT at 6:30 we have a VERY special Dance in the Park after Dark scheduled. Friday Night, September 19th Super CD Release Extravaganza! Featuring Trout Fishing in America and Rev. Payton's Big Damn Band.

Trout Fishing in America. is the long-standing musical partnership of Keith Grimwood and Ezra Idlet. The name, taken from an early Richard Brautigan novel, and seems almost as intriguing as a picture of this musical duo – Ezra on guitar stands six feet nine inches while Keith on bass stands five feet five and one-half inches. With the release of their twelfth CD, Merry Fishes to All, Trout Fishing earned their second Grammy nomination. Trout Fishing In America sees the future as the brightest part of their successful career. . . http://www.troutmusic.com/

Rev Peyton's first introduction to music was via his father's record collection of blues-oriented rock, including Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young and Bob Dylan. At 12, Rev Peyton's father gave him a Kay brand guitar. Shortly after, younger brother Jayme Peyton started playing the drums and, with a bass player, formed a band called Drive-Thru and played parties. A friend pointed out the blues sound of Rev Peyton's guitar playing, sending Peyton off on an exploration of the blues of BB King, Muddy Waters and Muddy Water's cousin Bukka White. The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band has been featured on Sirius Satellite Radio, has played multiple showcases at the South by Southwest music conference, has been the musical guest on NPR's Wad'Ya Know?. Their music is featured in the award-winning film Mississippi Cold Case by Canadian documentarian David Ridgen. Their song "Your Cousin's On Cops" lead to a gig as the house band on a Jerry Springer Pay-Per-View special. http://www.bigdamnband.com/

This is a FREE show, you aren't going to want to miss!!

I've Got a Brand New Pair of Roller Skates

Melanie Safka, professionally known throughout her career as Melanie, will be performing at our 61st Annual Original Ozark Folk Festival, Sunday November 9th. The tickets priced at $25.00 are selling fast. To purchase tickets for this rare event contact THE AUD at http://www.theaud.org.

Melanie initially signed to Columbia Records in the United States, Melanie released two singles on the label. Her debut album received rave reviews from Billboard Magazine which heralded her voice as "... wise beyond her years. Her non-conformist approaches to the selections on this LP make her a new talent to be reckoned with."

Later in 1969 Melanie had a hit with "Beautiful People" before performing at the Woodstock Festival. The inspiration for her signature song "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" apparently arose from the Woodstock audience lighting candles during her set. Later hits included "Peace Will Come (According To Plan)" and a cover of the Rolling Stones song "Ruby Tuesday"

After leaving Buddah Records, Melanie formed her own label, Neighborhood Records, in 1971 with her producer/husband Peter Schekeryk. It was on the Neighborhood label that Melanie had her biggest American hit with the novelty-sounding 1972 number one, "Brand New Key" (often referred to as "The Roller Skate Song"). "Brand New Key" sold over three million copies worldwide. When first released, Brand New Key was banned by some radio stations due to the lyrics being interpreted as being sexual innuendo:"I got a brand new pair of roller skates / You got a brand new key / I think that we should get together and try them out you see / I been looking around awhile / You got something for me / Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates / You got a brand new key. / I ride my bike, I roller skate, don't drive no car / Don't go too fast, but I go pretty far / For somebody who don't drive / I been all around the world / Some people say I've done alright for a girl...

Ike is coming!

Well, it looks like we have our second Hurricane headed toward North West Arkansas. Ike's a big one too. We have all the people on the Texas coast in our minds. We feel for you! We hope that you are safe and that you have a home to return to when the water recedes.

We are not happy that gas has gone to over $6.00 a gallon in some places in Texas. It is sad that people try and profit from disaster. We all have friends who are being affected by the storm, and now on top of that, after loosing work because of it they have to pay stupid gas prices.

Everyone will be impacted by Ike, all over the country. In Eureka Springs we are predicted to get another 2 to 7 inches of rain in the next couple of days. We are already in excess of our yearly rainfall average by over 12 inches. What are we to do? We suffer through it and try to manage as best we can.

Where ever you happen to be, it is our hope that you are dry and have a full tank of gas and that if you were displaced from your home that you will be able to return soon.

FEMA to Pay for Some Lodging

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has announced that FEMA Will Cover Lodging Costs of Hurricane Evacuees.

It is estimated that there are nearly 1.9 million evacuees from Gustav, and countless others who will be affected by the upcoming storms. So far, almost 5,000 evacuees have filed for lodging rooms in the southeastern U.S.

1.

Set up an account for your property via Corporate Lodging Consultants (CLC), FEMA's pay agent, online at https://www2.corplodging.com/ELA/
2.

As you set up your account, it's recommended you call CLC for assistance to walk through the process at (866) 545-9865
3.

Please note your registration online will NOT be complete until you receive your password via email. Once you receive this password, you must log back in to complete the registration process; CLC's normal operating hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (CST), Monday - Friday. While they are coordinating additional staff during off-hours, these hours are the best to call to receive assistance
4.

Note the requirements of the evacuees below, and be sure to obtain a copy of the guest's photo ID, Social Security card (or last four digits of their SSN), and their FEMA registration.

Here is what your lodging guest must do:

Beatlegras coming back to Eureka Springs

The story of Beatlegras...

The band Beatlegras was first formed when I asked both George and Milo if they wanted to do a studio project with me, taking Beatle songs and doing bluegrass arrangements with them. Knowing they were both very busy musicians I told them we would be 3 equal partners in whatever happened but meanwhile, I would pay them whatever I could. I also told Milo that George Anderson was going to do it while I was telling George the same thing about Milo. Thankfully they both decided to give it a try and it wasn't long before we realized we had something special.

I remember my first session with Milo, I showed him a list of possible songs to start with. He stared at it for a while, then his head started moving to a rhythm in his mind and he finally said, "Let's do Back in the U.S.S.R." He grabbed my guitar and started playing this really fast guitar solo line which I thought sounded really cool but I wasn't hearing anything that sounded like Back in the U.S.S.R. I said "that sounds awesome" thinking I would be playing some simple vamp behind it I asked "What do you want me to play to go with it?" He said, that's YOUR guitar part I'm gonna double it on mandolin. I've been hangin on like an innertube behind a boat ever since. At the end of the session I pulled out my check book and and started to write when Milo said, "What are you doing?" I said I want to pay you your normal rate. He said "You're trying to cut me out aren't you". I knew He was in.

When I first asked George, I said "Hey George I got this idea. I want to do this project that I hope turns into a band. It's gonna be doing Beatle songs on bluegrass instruments" He was smiling and listening until I said "and I want YOU to play Bass." He stopped smiling and just stared at me for a while then very uncomfortably said "But Dave I didn't grow up listening to The Beatles and playing bluegrass is not what I really do." I said "and that's why you'll be perfect for this! It's gonna be all about thinking outside the box and being true to our own influences and ideas." I asked George to listen to some Beatle songs, most of which he had never heard of. I knew he was in when he called back later and enthusiastically said "Dave, these are GREAT songs we've GOT to do this". I said "I know and the good news is there's about 200-300 to pick from!" Anyway- that's how we got started and I hope you hear and see the joy and passion we have in doing this. The Beatles were truly a phenomena that changed everything from a musical and cultural point of view. We truly hope to honor their music in our own way.

Dave Walser

Beatlegrass will be performing in The City Auditorium on October 18th at 8:00p.m. Tickes are available at http://www.theaud.org

Fall in the Ozarks

It is difficult to predict when the foliage in the Ozarks will start to turn. Historically, the last week of October through the second week of November is the peak time for fall colors in our ample woods. With all of the rain we've had this year, the colors should be spectacular!

This year, many of the old timers in the area are predicting an early and hard winter. With an early winter possible, an early fall is very likely. We are already experiencing fall like temperatures of highs in the 70's and lows in the 50's with an occasional 80+ day in the mix.

Fall in the Ozarks is a beautiful time and Eureka Springs is one of the best places to experience it. There are several events scheduled for Eureka Springs all the way through December. Be sure to check out http://www.eurekasprings.org or http://www.eurekaspringschamber.com for information on what is going on in and around Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

A day of Rememberance.

Sunday is a day to rest, a day for remembrance and a day for thanks. This Sunday we would like to take a moment to remember all those that have lost something or someone to the strange weather this year. With all the flooding in the heartland and the tropical storm and hurricanes this year, the loss of life and property has been very great. I am sure there are many others in your life that could use a moment of silent contemplation. So, try and take the time to remember, reflect and think if there is anything you can do to help your fellow man out.

What A Wonderful Three Day Week End We Had In Eureka Springs

We had many fine musicians in Basin Spring Park last weekend.

Saturday we had Chuck Onofio playing a mean violin, Jimmy Wells played a few tunes on his guitar. Jones Van Jones did a few old standards, The Pope County Bootleggers were fun, Derral Gleason from Austin Texas played us a few and the day was closed out with out very own Mountain Sprout.

Sunday was just as much fun with The Matt and Gus Trio playing some really fine Jazz, Cross Eyed Child played some nice 60's and 70's Rock tunes, Jeff Lee gave us his unique style, and a new band from Fayetteville, Hectic Hysteria, played us some really nice original music.

Monday was our Second Annual Spring Street Sweethearts. We heard from the following beautiful sweethearts: Korey Mattox, Catherine Reed, Pearl Brick, Lany balance, Emily Kaitz, Susan Shore and Opal Fly. The Spring Street Sweethearts started last year in celebration of women's right to vote. This year it has even more meaning with the upcoming Presidential Election. It was a beautiful day to celebrate both Labor Day and Women Voting.

Happy Labor Day!

The History of Labor Day

Labor Day: How it Came About; What it Means

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Founder of Labor Day

More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold."

But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

The First Labor Day

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

Labor Day Legislation

Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From them developed the movement to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

A Nationwide Holiday

The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday — a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

The character of the Labor Day celebration has undergone a change in recent years, especially in large industrial centers where mass displays and huge parades have proved a problem. This change, however, is more a shift in emphasis and medium of expression. Labor Day addresses by leading union officials, industrialists, educators, clerics and government officials are given wide coverage in newspapers, radio, and television.

The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker.
